Operating income (loss) differs from net income (loss) attributable to Everest Re Group, the most directly comparable

generallyacceptedaccountingprinciplefinancialmeasure,bytheexclusionofrealizedcapitalgains(losses)on

investments and netforeign exchange income(expense). Management believes thatpresentation of operating income

(loss)providesusefulinformationtoinvestorsbecauseitmoreaccuratelymeasuresandpredictstheregistrant’s

resultsofoperationsbyremovingthevariabilityarisingfromboththemanagementoftheregistrant’sinvestment
