Operating income (loss) differs fromnet income (loss) attributable to EverestRe Group, the most directly comparable

generally acceptedaccounting principlefinancial measure,by theexclusion ofrealized capitalgains (losses)on

investments and netforeign exchange income(expense). Management believesthat presentation ofoperating income

(loss) providesuseful informationto investorsbecause itmore accuratelymeasures andpredicts theregistrant’s

results ofoperations byremoving thevariability arisingfrom boththe managementof theregistrant’s investment

portfolio and the fluctuationsof foreign currency exchangerates. In addition, management, analystsand investors use

operating income (loss) to evaluate the financial performance of the registrant and the insurance industry in general.
